Wild Wash Deo Tempers the B.O.

I’ve tried a lot of alternatives to regular antiperspirant/deodorant and very few of them have yielded long-term success. You name it, I’ve probably tried it; Tom’s of Maine, Lavanilla, Naturally Fresh’s deodorant crystal, I’ve even used men’s deodorant—because apparently men are the only sex that wants just a deodorant—and of all these, I had the longest run of success with men’s Old Spice deodorant. Now I’m sure a lot of you are wondering what all the fuss is about with using a natural deodorant and I’m sure you’re expecting an all-chemicals-are-bad agenda rant. KC Maker Faire Makes for Family Fun

Summer is the season of festivals and KC has quite the plethora of fun fests to go to. Last weekend you had Boulevardia and this past weekend was the 5th Annual Maker Faire hosted by Make magazine. This being my first year going to the Maker Faire, I had no idea what to expect, only making me more excited for I found there. The maker faire is held in many cities around the United States but each city hosts their own local makers. And maker here is used in the general sense. The maker faire hosts makers of all kinds; farmers, engineers, wood workers, metal workers, etc. Brent’s favorite part of the fair was all the science and technology tables set up throughout Union Station and I have to admit, it was kind of fun listening to him tell me how everything I didn’t understand worked. Boulevardia: Year two in Review

Father’s day is a busy weekend and typically means, if you’re anything like me, you’re fretting over what to get dear old dad because you can’t figure out what to buy that he won’t just buy himself. Father’s day weekend also marked Boulvardia’s 2nd “birthday”. Last year, Kansas City’s own Boulevard Brewing Company created their our little country named Boulevard and crammed it with of all the things KC natives—or anyone, for that matter—love: beer, food truck food, music and local wares. From year one to year two, Boulevardia’s notoriety has only grown and gotten better. Brent, having never been a “Boulevardian” before, happily came along to embrace the magic of one of my favorite festivals. Continue reading

My mini-haul at the Crossroads

This past week, I took a trip down to the crossroads to pick up a tube of my favorite lip balm, or “lip embellishment” as it’s printed on the tube. While I was there, I decided to step into Raygun to try another lip balm I had been eyeing that was made by another local company; Messner Family Farm.

The Messner niche is their five beehives, most of which are completely funded by their kickstart backers. Now, I have to admit, upon buying their tinted lip balm, I was little skeptical about using a balm that consisted of primarily beeswax. I don’t have anything against bees or honey, but the last time I used a beeswax based balm, it was Burt’s Bees and it made my lips so raw, they were bleeding most of the time. Hence my apprehension. Brent, his Parents, the Jacobson and Me

We all have to go through this phase of the relationship right? Meeting the parents? While I wish I could say I’ve done this plenty of times—I haven’t. We could also probably draw a few conclusions about what this does or doesn’t say about me but the truth is I’ve only recently felt serious enough about someone to want to meet his parents, and last Saturday, I was beyond anxious leading up to meeting Brent’s parents.

I had previously settled on one outfit, but due to the rainy weather we had been having and the fact that my sister said it was too short, I decided to wear longer ensemble. As I began doing my makeup, I kept wondering what Brent’s parents were like and whether or not they would like me. Brent kept telling me there was nothing to worry about but I was still anxious; not only was I about to meet his parents, I was meeting them at The Jacobson, a local restaurant in the crossroads where the most expensive thing on the menu was about as much as it takes for me to fill my little Ford Focus. While this may not seem expensive to some, to a girl who’s only making about 30k a year, I’d never dream of eating there myself. The first time I ever went to Swirl wine bar, I was on a date with a guy in which I had tasked myself to write a story about a blanket he owned (yes, I had his permission). I brought a notebook into the bar to take notes and needless to say everyone that sat next to us thought that was pretty odd, even the bartender.  But that didn’t really bother me. I’m used to being the odd duck and a bar that showcased wines on tap seemed pretty odd to me. So, I suppose it was only natural that I would end up being a regular at Swirl.

On most days of the week, I would swing by to have a glass of wine to decompress after a long day of work. But, last Friday night warranted a change in routine as Swirl’s owner, Heather launched her own wine inspired coffee blend, compliments of KC’s very own The Roasterie. Continue reading

Reflections on Memorial Day at the WWI Museum

Last weekend, my boyfriend, Brent and I took a trip down to the WWI Museum because he loves history and I’ve never been. All my life, I have always found myself surrounded by history buffs. But, the history fanatic that stands out to me the most is my minister. He has always expressed a love of history, even going so far as attending local historical events around the city. But, it isn’t just his love of history that I admire; it’s also his ability to understand that knowledge of history will strongly affect the future. As a young girl, I didn’t quite understand just how important history was but as an older young girl, it is starting to become apparent that we have forgotten that pieces of history that make us who we are as Americans.

At the WWI Museum, you are invited to watch a film that explores the reasons why the war started in the first place. The most glaring reason; evolving and expanding ideas along with the expansion of technology. As we develop more knowledge about the world, the more compelled we are to take charge and harness that knowledge before anyone else; such was the world then and so it still is today. This seems to be one of the origins of war. Continue reading

Snow and Co. with Cora and Co.

An ex once recommended we check out Snow and Co. before we broke up. When the relationship fizzled out, and was admittedly rebound dating, I mentioned Snow and Co. The date itself was horrible and in my gut I should’ve ended the date when he constantly reminded me that California, where he’d just moved from, was way better than Kansas City as if it were some sort of knee jerk response to everything I said. Well if it’s so much better, why don’t you just get back in your Mercedes and go back? The only good thing I got out of that date was a free pair of Ray-Bans he decided to give me and some damn good drinks from Snow and Co. that helped make that date much easier.

The Art of (trying to) Get(ting) Ahead

I’ve sat in this same spot at the same place for the past few months. The routine never changes: I come in and Heather asks me what I’m having. Usually, I settle for a wine, but on occasion I’m in the mood for a beer. Almost every time I’ve come into Swirl, I order a drink and surf the web looking for a job. I’m always successful at finding a job I want. Landing the job in question is the real problem. Continue reading
