National Snack month is coming up soon. And next month as we celebrate love in the way of consuming pounds of chocolate, ice cream or both, I thought it would be a good idea to suggest a few healthier snacking options. Last week, Kansas Citian’s open tabled like they never have before in anticipation of the 7th annual Kansas City Restaurant Week, myself included. The fundraiser/restaurant expose benefits prominent local charities while feeding adventurous foodies for reasonable prices. If you weren’t making reservations or at least looking through menus before the start of restaurant week last Friday, you have probably set yourself up to miss out on a lot of those “hot commodity” restaurants. But, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of amazing alternatives to choose from. If any of you braved the murky heat last weekend, you may have been at Cultivate, hosted by Chipotle. Cultivate, though not local, does broach the importance of knowing where your food comes from and happily supported many local restaurants and breweries around Kansas City. The festival is packed as to be expected; it was free and Chipotle was involved.
Upon making a 15 minute trek from my car, I immediately headed towards the beer hall. While I probably should’ve been sucking down some water, I wasn’t about to miss all the local breweries Chipotle had invited to share their summer brews. While I usually go for an old-fashioned wheat on a hot summers day, I had a few saisons, a beer style I also love but usually don’t have often. I bought a few samples from various breweries, including “A Saison Kiss” by Martin City, but finally landed on the ginger peach saison from Cinder Block Brewery. I even ventured outside my comfort zone and was prompted to try my friend’s chocolate stout. The verdict; not bad considering that I am not a stout person. It was definitely a brew I could see myself drinking more of, had she remembered which brewery she got it from. Continue reading
We all have to go through this phase of the relationship right? Meeting the parents? While I wish I could say I’ve done this plenty of times—I haven’t. We could also probably draw a few conclusions about what this does or doesn’t say about me but the truth is I’ve only recently felt serious enough about someone to want to meet his parents, and last Saturday, I was beyond anxious leading up to meeting Brent’s parents.
I had previously settled on one outfit, but due to the rainy weather we had been having and the fact that my sister said it was too short, I decided to wear longer ensemble. As I began doing my makeup, I kept wondering what Brent’s parents were like and whether or not they would like me. Brent kept telling me there was nothing to worry about but I was still anxious; not only was I about to meet his parents, I was meeting them at The Jacobson, a local restaurant in the crossroads where the most expensive thing on the menu was about as much as it takes for me to fill my little Ford Focus. While this may not seem expensive to some, to a girl who’s only making about 30k a year, I’d never dream of eating there myself. Not only that, the pressure to impress them was higher as they picked such a nice place to take me. Continue reading
